Introduction to static pressure pile driver:

The static pressure pile driver is brand new environmental pile foundation construction equipment. In the construction of infrastructure projects, the vibration, noise and other construction hazards arising from the construction of pile foundation projects have aroused public concern. This can cause unestimated damage to the stratum structure and potential hazard to the project quality. Due to a large volume of domestic pile driver, the construction site should be leveled before construction, which wastes material and energy, increases the construction cost and extends the construction time. If the construction site is near the residential areas, it will seriously affect resident's normal life in both day and night.

The static pressure pile driver totally changes existing domestic construction concept and it is designed according to the principle of safety, environmental protection, efficiency and energy saving.

1. Safety production: The equipment is designed with remote control and manual control. In a harsh environment, constructors can use remote control equipment according to site condition to avoid a safety accident

2. Ultra-low noise: The steel sheet pile is erected hydraulically, without noise and vibration. The construction process is not limited to the environment and time.

3. Energy saving and efficiency: The static pressure pile driver, with the frictional force between the jacked pile and the soil layer as the counter force, presses the next pile, so it needs no additional weight and can save energy. By virtue of unique structural design, the static pressure pile driver can independently work on the jacked pile, so it is applicable to construction in any ground environment (water), with no need for temporary facilities, and can reduce the construction cost and time. To solve the problem that the static pressure pile driver can press the pile into a hard soil layer, it is furnished with a superhard alloy bit driven by a hydraulic motor.

4. Overcome obstacles in the construction environment: In the rapid urbanization process of China, bridges, building foundations, both sides of roads and railways, river embankments, coasts and inclined hills beside residential areas must be reinforced to prevent changes in the soil structure and effect on people's life safety. Therefore, the places where heavy equipment cannot reach, or the places that cannot be constructed due to limitations of space, time and old buildings must be reinforced, and the static pressure pile driver is adopted due to small volume and unique design.

5. Overcome obstacles in the construction height: e.g.: To reinforce the piers, the compressed pile driver can be adopted with affecting normal traffic.

       Pressing method

Generally pressing method is selected according to geological condition. In soft stratum whose standard penetration test value N is below 25, static pressure pressing method can be adopted, namely “independent pressing method”; when the value N exceeds 25, “water jet pressing method” with high pressure water jet or “twist drill pressing method” can be adopted.

Independent pressing method

Used equipment: Static pressure pile driver + power unit

This method is suitable for soft stratums whose value N is below 25. That is, the steel sheet pile is pressed into the ground using static pressure pile driver as the press force and static load.

Water jet aided pressing method

Used equipment: Static pressure pile driver + power unit + water jet drum + high pressure pump

This method is suitable for hard stratums whose value N is above 25. That is, high pressure water is injected into the stratum in front of the pile to suddenly raise the interstitial water among the soil particles. As a result, the soil particles are apt to move to reduce the resistance at the lower pile tip. Meanwhile, it can reduce the frictional resistance between surrounding areas of the pile and soil and that between the latches and press the pile using a small press force. It can also prevent damage to pile materials. The water jet quantity can be adjusted according to construction condition, and the effect on the stratum can be minimized to ensure the construction efficiency.

Twist drill aided pressing method

Used equipment: Static pressure pile driver + power unit + twist drill

This method is suitable for gravel, pebble or rock stratum and other hard stratums. The pile is pressed and drilled by the twist drill simultaneously to reduce the penetration resistance. “The twist drill” used cooperatively with the static pressure pile driver drills the stratum right below the pile tip to the least extent and presses the pile while inhibiting the pressing resistance. Due to low displacement, surrounding stratums will not be destroyed, and the piles with a strong support force can be quickly erected. This method is suitable for soft stratums I and II and medium hard stratum such as mudstone, sandstone and granite.

Rotary cutting and pressing

Used equipment: Screw-in type static pressure pile driver + power unit + water system

This method can not only overcome pebble bed or rock stratum or other hard stratums, but also underground obstacles such as boulder or reinforced concrete structures. This pressing technique greatly broadens the application scope of pressing method. “The screw-in type static pressure pile driver” can penetrate underground obstacles to press the toothed steel sheet pile. Not only is vibrationless and noiseless, this method uses the special tooth at the pile tip to realize minimal cutting, effectively control the displacement and minimize the environmental impact. It not only protects the environment, but also prevents core shift and deformation of piles and ensures reliability and accuracy.

Whereas the static pressure pile driver is self-propelled and works on the completed pile, namely “no temporary construction”, it maximizes the construction efficiency and opens up an epoch-making new construction mode. The equipment does not require temporary trestles, roads and other large temporary projects, it has obvious advantages under special site conditions such as water, inclined sections, uneven sections, narrow sections and low sections.

Applicable pile materials

The static pressure pile driver is applicable to pile materials in various shapes and materials.

Pile materials include Lassen steel sheet pile (hot-rolled & cold-bent), Z-steel sheet pile, hat-shaped steel sheet pile (900mm), super-near steel sheet pile (Zero Pile 600mm), steel pipe and sheet pile, steel pipe pile, H-shaped steel sheet pile, concrete pile, PC wall and straight steel sheet pile, etc.

Application scope

Based on standard penetration test (SPT), the steel sheet pile can be pressed into hard stratums whose value N is below 500. The steel sheet pile can also be pressed into stratums such as boulder, rock stratum and concrete.

“Lassen” steel sheet pile is a renowned building material in the civil engineering field. It is applied to various retaining structures, and its application field and advantage have been (in the professional field) proved.

In 1902, German chief engineer Tryggve Larssen developed world's first U-shaped rivet interlocked steel sheet pile in Bremen.

The sheet pile has been produced since the beginning of the 21st century in Europe. In 0913, Japan imported and first adopted sheet pile in the retaining wall of Mitsui Memorial Museum. In 1923, Japan imported plenty of sheet piles and adopted them in the Great Kanto Earthquake restoration project based on special operating performance of steel sheet pile. Due to great market potential and development prospect, Japan started to produce steel sheet pile in 1931. At first, there are thin-walled cold-formed light type and hot-rolled type steel sheet piles. Whereas the former has great machining and operating limitations, the latter becomes a mainstream product.

In the 1950s, the Ministry of Railways Bridge Bureau first introduced sheet pile from the Soviet Union to build Wuhan Yangtze River Railway bridge cofferdam.

Due to limitations of cheap land resources and human resources, the application and development of steel sheet pile, a metallic building material, are still restricted. With China's rapid economic growth, various convenient, efficient and environmental construction methods have been recognized and developed.

Overview of steel sheet pile

1. Definition of steel sheet pile

Steel sheet pile is a steel structure with an interlock device on the edge that can be freely combined to form a kind of continuous and dense retaining wall.

Cold-formed steel sheet pile is a steel structure that is formed by the forming mill through continuous rolling and whose lateral latch can be continuously spliced to form a kind of sheet piled wall.

There are different types of steel sheet piles, U type, Z type, L type, S type and straight type, of tens of specifications.

Steel sheet pile, as a new building material, plays a critical role in projects such as bridge cofferdam, large pipeline laying, retaining wall wharfs of temporary channels, parapet wall of unloading area and revetment of retaining wall, etc.

2. Steel sheet pile production technology

Steel sheet pile products can be classified into thin-walled cold-formed steel sheet pile and hot-rolled steel sheet pile.

Cold-formed steel sheet pile

Cold-formed steel sheet pile is made of thin steel sheet (whose thickness is 8mm-14mm) through cold forming and machining. It features low production cost, low price and customizable size. Whereas the machining method is simple, the thickness of all parts of the pile body is identical and the sectional dimension cannot be optimized, the steel consumption increases, it is hard to control the shape of the latch, and the coupling is not buckled tightly to prevent water leakage. Due to capability constraint of cold bending equipment, only products with low steel strength and small thickness can be produced. Besides, a large stress will be produced in the cold bending process, so the pile is apt to crack in use and there are many application limitations.

Hot-rolled steel sheet pile

Hot-rolled steel sheet pile is made through high temperature rolling using roughing mill and rail-beam mill or universal mill and has the advantages of standard size, excellent performance, reasonable section and high quality.

According to section shape, there are different types of hot-rolled steel sheet piles, U type, Z type, straight type, H type and tubular type.

3. Advantage and purpose of steel sheet pile

a. Advantages of steel sheet pile:

Basic structure of steel sheet pile: Steel sheet pile, two-sided joint structure, underground or underwater wall.

Due to special structure, steel sheet pile has unique features:

(1) Strong bearing capacity, light weight, and excellent strength and rigidity of continuous walls made of steel sheet piles.

(8) Compared with other monomer structures, the walls are lighter and have better adaptation to deformation, so they are suitable for prevention and treatment of various geological disasters.

Besides, the steel sheet pile can solve a series of problems in the excavation process, ensure safety and promptness of disaster relief and rescue, lower the space requirements without weather limitations; simplify the complex program for inspection material or system performance, and ensure good adaptation and interchangeability.

b. Purpose of steel sheet pile:

Steel sheet pile has been widely used for excavation and enclosure of retaining walls of foundation pit, groove, pipeline and basement of subway station, tunnel, bridge cofferdam, revetment, municipal engineering and civil engineering and plays a critical role in engineering.

Steel sheet pile can be used for permanent building structures, temporary building structures and buildings for disaster relief and rescue;

4. Application in China:

In the end of the 1950s, the Ministry of Railways Bridge Bureau first introduced U-shaped sheet pile from the Soviet Union for underwater construction of the bridge cofferdam of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.

In the following decades, hot-rolled steel sheet pile has been disused due to economic constraints, shortage of production equipment and rolling technology and deficiency in engineering machinery and backward construction technology.

In the end of the 20th century, a steel company produced over 5000 tons of 400mm wide SLU5-1 steel sheet piles using process equipment produced by the introduced universal mill production line. They have been successfully applied to projects such as Nenjiang Bridge cofferdam, Jingjiang New Century shipyard 300,000t dockyard and Bangladesh flood prevention project.

5. Market survey:

It is reported that about 60% of overseas hot-rolled steel sheet piles are used for single-use permanent structures and about 40% are repeatedly used for temporary structures.

Steel sheet pile is reused by professional piling rent companies. e.g.: Germany Thyssen Krupp owns 13 chain piling and rent companies, which almost cover the entire German market.

Presently, Japan has a steel sheet pile rent and production capacity of above 500/000t/year and an annual turnover rate of above 3 times (the depreciation cycle should be 8 times).

Besides Japan, the steel sheet pile rent and piling industry is also very developed in Singapore and South Korea.

Presently, the world's annual consumption of steel sheet pile is above 3 million tons, including 500,000-600,000t of Europe and above 500,000t of North America.

In Asia, Japan has an annual consumption of 500,000-600,000t, South Korea has an annual consumption of about 200,000t, and Southeast Asia has an annual consumption of nearly 200,000t (including an annual consumption of 100,000t of Singapore).

6. Production status:

China is at the stage of rapid economic development and has an extensive need for steel sheet pile due to a vast territory and complex geologic structure. Meanwhile, as the first modern metallurgical equipment was put into production in China, large-scale steel works are able to produce steel sheet piles, and China has occupied an increasingly important place in the production and application of steel sheet pile.

(1) Hot-rolled steel sheet pile: Existing domestic hot-rolled steel sheet pile manufacturers include Jinxi, Laigang, Anshan Zizhu, Baotou Steel and Wuhan Steel, which have developed and produced steel sheet piles.
